Now taking that same example one step further, if the PR10 website decides it likes 9 other websites as well and as a result refers a total of 10 websites the value of that PR10 website goes down. Now the value of the PR10 website is diluted by the number of outbound links. The PR10 divided by 10 links now carries the same weight as a PR1 website referring 1 other website. The PR of the 10 referred websites is still better than the PR0 website. The margin of benefit received by the first website referred by the PR10 website has been greatly reduced.

One of the most important factors that influence the Page Rank is a well-kept website. A website that is constantly updated and fresh receives higher marks than those that do not change. Websites that are kept up to date will get full benefit from the factors that establish the website's PR. The greater the time frame since the last update, the less benefit that website receives from the other factors establishing that site's Page Rank.

Another factor that helps boost a website's PR is the amount of actual traffic that goes to a website. More traffic tells Google that more people value the content of that website. Google will naturally give a higher PR to sites that hold more value for the internet consumer. Conversely, websites with little or no traffic do not hold any intrinsic value for the internet consumer, therefore the PR for those websites is very low.

The same is true for sites promoted through the organic search engine results. Your domain name needs to be relevant to the search, or you won't get the click through.

3. Relevant Content - Just like the domain name, if your site's content isn't relevant to the search being conducted, then your listing isn't going to get clicked! If your site is a blog, then the abstract for each post needs to be tailored to look relevant to the kind of keywords that will be pointing to it. It is like the body of a PPC ad. Optimize Your SEO Strategy, Don't Overdo It

On innumerable occasions, I have come across web pages and websites which have been Search Engine Optimized, beyond any comprehensible imagination. One look at the aforementioned, and you are left with no doubt whatsoever that the web pages and sites in question have been optimized for search engines, often in reckless manner, with no regard or relevance to the subject matter - or to the poor, hapless reader!

Even as a person with over five years of experience in the SEO domain, I fail to fathom the "over-SEO" of websites, which is despised upon by one and all. Search engines like Google consider such "over-SEO" as SEO-spam and altogether ban them from appearing in the search results that they display. In my opinion, that is the right step that they take. I am quite against "keyword-stuffing" that purports to unfairly inflate search rankings of companies, often in irrelevant contexts.

SEO in my opinion is about creativity, and not monotony. You don't apply the same "formula" across all the websites that you work on. Instead, you use your creativity to come out with ingenious techniques which are non-offensive in nature, yet bring about the necessary search engine optimization results. In fact, across my entire tenure in the SEO domain, I do not recall even a single instance wherein I have resorted to "keyword-stuffing" or any other SEO technique considered unacceptable. I never even felt the need to resort to any such unfair means. For me, each SEO assignment was a fresh challenge, that involved innovative, ingenious techniques which i applied and brought about complete satisfaction to my clients, without offending any of the search engines.

Techniques that I commonly observe and particularly despise are stuffing keywords across all possible locations - be it the Title tags, in the Meta description tags, the H1 or any of the H tags, as the first words on a particular page, and so on. I have even observed the keyword phrases being separately provided on the requisite pages, in different font sizes, colors and styles. How disdainful could things get?!

To clients hiring SEO "specialists" who resort to any of the above mentioned malpractices, I can only warn you about the negative affects of such actions; your site could face a permanent ban on the prominent search engines, which will obviously have an immensely painful impact on your business, particularly if you garner most (or all) of your clients vide your online presence. Therefore, go the creative, yet conventional way, and all will be well, while otherwise, things could only be immensely painful.

Looking at such SEO efforts, I often advise my clients to in fact forgo their SEO intentions altogether. Instead, focus on building up unique and authentic copy; in fact, even hiring the services of a professional copywriter for the same would be a good investment rather than a cost. You would have fresh and clean content, and then, using original and acceptable techniques, you could ensure that your website appears prominently across popular search engines.

So, keep in mind, Optimize, NOT Over-Optimize, else be prepared to face flak from all the popular search engines!

If you see a bunch of Squidoo pages or Hub Pages but not Ezine Articles then you will probably want to write your article in Ezine because that way if you optimize correctly you will be booted up to the top ten in Google for the keyword almost instantly. However, just because there is other competition like Squidoo and Hub Pages out there doesn't mean that you can't steal their spot in Google. It just requires a little but more work.

Here are a few tips for article marketing optimization.

• Place your keyword always at the start of the article and link it out if possible.

• Repeat that specific keyword in your article a few times, not to much though. Google will penalize you for that. Use good judgment and you should be fine.

• Making your keyword bold, italicized, or underlined will get recognized by Google and increase your ranking.

• Make sure you include accurate tags. The more specific your tags the better. However at the same time, you want to encompass everyone that would be searching your articles. Choose wisely.

• Most important of all is your linking structure. Google gives more value to articles with sites linking back to them.

Last month I wrote about a handful of social media successes. That post prompted some conversations around the water cooler, and a few people asked for something similar for search engine optimization. SEO is one of my favorite topics, so who am I to say no to this request? I've scoured the web, and here's what I've come up with.

Mingle2 - In 2007 Matthew Inman (the former CTO of SEOmoz), designed and built the dating site Mingle2. Because of his previous experience with search engine optimization he knew the importance of inbound links, and he had the skills to boost his fledgling site through the likes of Google and Yahoo!. Within four months he generated nearly a quarter of a million links to the site and ranked #1 on Google for the phrases "online dating" and "free online dating." This success earned him mentions on popular sites such as Digg and MSNBC.com, and generated nearly 2 million pageviews per month. Inman eventually sold the website to, and now works for JustSayHi. However cool Mingle2 is, it would have never succeeded this quickly (and in such a competitive market it may not have succeeded at all) apart from Inman's skill in generating traffic through search engine optimization. San Diego Chiropractic - David Klein is the owner of a San Diego chiropractic firm, and when he saw the potential within Google he decided to try to rank for the term "san diego chiropractor." He attended a couple of PubCon's and learned some techniques for ranking well for search terms. He then got to work, transcribing the video of a Matt Cutts talk, and generating clever cartoons of some of the people he ran into at the event. These efforts have earned him more than 3,000 one way links and he has achieved his goal. More than two years later he's still above competitors that have that search phrase in their domain! Matt Cutts was so impressed that he even blogged about Dr Klein's success.

Automobile Recovery Bureau, Inc - This is a Houston auto repossession company that has been in business for more than 60 years and was looking for a boost in business. They contracted an SEO firm which helped them decide on a new domain, update their content and generated links to the site. The plan worked, within a year they ranked #1 for terms such as "houston repo" and "houston repossession." They must have been pleased with the results because their SEO efforts began in 2002, and over the years they have done the work to maintain a #1 ranking for the targeted terms.

Falcon Storage - This is a Red McCombs Media client that leases storage containers in central Texas. In the summer of 2007 they launched a new website that generates quotes, has detailed information about their products, and the businesses which they serve. Six months later they expressed a desire for SEO, so we got to work keyword optimizing their site. Within two weeks they ranked #1 for such terms as "austin connex box" and "san antonio storage container." The number of quotes generated by their website skyrocketed. Since then they've launched a blog, which has helped to solidify their strength in this market.

Southwest Airlines - Once again I have to include Southwest. I'm not a fanboy, but I do think that they get modern marketing at a level that eludes many other companies, and this is a great story. Southwest's social marketing manager, Paula Berg, shared this last week at the Austin Online Marketing Summit. Every year the folks at Southwest's headquarters, including the CEO, celebrate Halloween with a crazy costume. One year the CEO mentioned that he planned to dress as Gene Simmons. Someone commented that the CEO of USAir had donned that costume a few years ago, and after discussing it for a while they went to Google to prove it. They tried searches such as "doug parker gene simmons," "usair halloween," "doug parker costume" and anything else they could think of to find the answer. For every search term they tried, Nuts About Southwest was the top hit. They had blogged about halloween so much that their site was the top hit for terms directly about their competitor. Talk about success!

Be verbose and you'll rank higher in Google and the other search engines than a similar site (all other things being equal) that is less verbose. Being verbose can be as important as onsite search engine optimization techniques.

How did I come to this conclusion?

Article marketing tactics are offsite search engine optimization tactics. I've tested article marketing and compared the increase in ranking with other forms of promotion. If you write an article and are lucky enough to get said article accepted in a high page rank, high traffic, trusted (by Google) authority article directory... You will CRUSH a site that does not have those powerful backlinks pointing to it.

I'm of the opinion that a new site should NOT be written for human consumption unless and until it ranks where you want to be found in the serps.
