5 Search Engine Optimization Mistakes You Should Avoid

Since more and more businesses show interests in search engine optimization there's a growing necessity for quality SEO advice. There are a number of things one should be aware of when hiring an SEO company or opting for a DIY optimization campaign. SEO is not rocket science but still you need to be equipped with at least a basic understanding of what it's all about and be aware of the common mistakes you should by all means avoid to succeed online. Here's a short list of Search Engine Optimization Don'ts that will prevent you from heading the wrong way with your SEO.

5 Don'ts of Search Engine Optimization

1. Don't fall for SEO Scams

You don't need to submit your website to thousands of search engines or 'quality' directories to perform well in the search results. In fact you don't need to submit your website to search engines at all. One quality incoming link will do the job and your website will be indexed by the search engine spiders pretty fast.

Keep in mind that anything that looks too good to be true is most likely to be just your money down the drain. Don't fall for top ranking guarantees of any kind. There are just too many out of control factors in the SEO game for SEO companies to be able to deliver their promise all the time. Whether you do SEO yourself or outsource it to a company make sure that only ethical techniques and SEO tools are used.

2. Don't Expect Quick Results

SEO is an ongoing process. There are no set-and-forget options. In order to gain high rankings for your targeted keywords and maintain them over the long term you need to be ready to invest your time or money or both and have patience because success in the organic search engine listings doesn't come overnight.

3. Don't Over Optimize

In the quest for search engine rankings webmasters and SEOs very often tend to shift the focus of their efforts from the visitors experience to the search engines. As a result there appear websites entirely designed and created for search engine spiders. The content (which is not necessarily poor or bad) is stuffed with keywords there are typos spilled here and there in an attempt to optimize for common misspellings and the overall appeal of the website to the visitors is hindered by excessive optimization.

4. Don't Target Overly Broad Keywords

Although the traffic stats for general terms like, "cars" of "mobile phones" can be overwhelming that doesn't mean that these are the best keywords to target. It's not just that these search strings are too competitive, thought this is also a thing to consider. Broad keywords are usually the worst converting ones. You can never guess what exactly the searcher has on his mind when Googling for 'windows'. He may be interested in the Microsoft's operating system, window replacement services or whatever. Try to focus on more specific keywords that best reflect the searchers interest in your business offer.

5. Don't Overuse Flash and Rich Graphics

Flash is cool and all but you need to keep in mind that search engine spiders cannot read or understand objects build with Flash or images. Whenever you put important information in a graphic form make sure to have it a text version of it for the search engines to index.

These are the basic no-go principles of SEO. If you follow these simple guidelines you'll save yourself from a lot of trouble and unnecessary expenses.
