Google's Front Page Doesn't Guarantee Huge Traffic

Webmasters that have struggled in their SEO efforts are frequently surprised when they finally do get their websites to the top of Google's front page and find that they still aren't getting significant amounts of traffic. That isn't to say there isn't traffic to be had for those that can tame the Google beast, it just means that it isn't a foregone conclusion that when you hit the top three spots on Google for your keywords your site will be inundated with targeted traffic.

This probably sounds like heresy to many people, but I know it to be true as I have experienced it myself. I had the top spot on Google's front page for a highly competitive keyword and still was only getting about 20 visitors a day from organic search engine traffic. Disappointing to say the least...

Is this an article telling you not to bother trying to get to Google's front page?

Not at all!

It is about making sure that when you get there, you are ready.

Getting to the front page of the organic search listings isn't really all that hard (more on that later) but there are a few things to keep in mind to make sure your site gets the traffic it deserves from Google's front page once you are there.

1. High Volume Keywords - Ranking well for a keyword that has less than 100 Searches/Month can't get you significant traffic. This may seem pretty basic, but when you look at how much competition there is over keywords you should also be looking at the monthly search volume. There are keywords and keyword phrases that show up as being very competitive but have almost no search volume. If you are going to do the SEO work to rank for a keyword, why not do it for one with a lot of people looking for it...

2. Keyword Rich Domain Names - If you were running a PPC campaign aimed at the keywords you are ranking for, you would be sure to have a good keyword rich domain name pointing to your site. The same is true for sites promoted through the organic search engine results. Your domain name needs to be relevant to the search, or you won't get the click through.

3. Relevant Content - Just like the domain name, if your site's content isn't relevant to the search being conducted, then your listing isn't going to get clicked! If your site is a blog, then the abstract for each post needs to be tailored to look relevant to the kind of keywords that will be pointing to it. It is like the body of a PPC ad. The Meta info also needs to be relevant so that the website's title showing up in your search engine listings will make sense in relation to the keywords triggering it.

These are really the big three things to keep in mind to make sure you get the targeted traffic your site deserves when you hit Google's front page. Obviously these need to be taken into account well before you start working to rank for specific keywords and phrases with backlinks and article marketing.

SEO work can and should be a major source of targeted traffic to your websites and blogs. Just be sure you think ahead about the keywords you will be working to rank for and you will be ready when you do hit the top of Google's front page.
