Search Engine Optimization - Understanding the Basics

Search engine optimization (SEO) is one of the most important aspects of any online marketing campaign, and unfortunately it is often one of the most overlooked due to lack of information and reliance on other methods of generating traffic.

Search Engines scour the web daily with 'spiders' looking for new websites, and they use highly complicated algorithms to rank and prioritize sites based on a variety technologies. SEO aims to use techniques that ensure a website gets looked at favorably when compared to other sites and done correctly; It can have a dramatic affect on traffic in a short to medium time frame.

By following this quick basic guide so you can guarantee a more favorable listing with any search engine.

• Keyword research - Keywords are what make up an online query, so it is important to know what your visitors are typing in to look for the niche or market you are targeting. It is also beneficial in order to find out how many competitors there are for a specific phrase as chances are many search terms are too competitive. Thus just like niche marketing, it is important to drill-down to non-competitive, high volume terms which can be easily dominated.

• Rich keywords - By using good keywords in the site title and content, Google will see a more important site when compared to one that has just a passing reference. However, there is a fine line between too many keywords and if you use these techniques too much, Google will penalize and ban your site accordingly. Use keywords sparingly and try not to over-repeat them more than a few times per page.

SEO is not so much a technical necessity but more of a change in mindset. Simply remembering the smaller things like keyword research and page content will help your rankings a great deal more than you could ever imagine.
