Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has been around for quite some time. You write content for your website, place certain keywords within that content, and then link in to that page through external pages so the search engines can spot the keywords on your page and index your site within their system. That is how the system works in a nutshell, but it is a fluid system that is rather ingenious when you get into the mechanics of it.
The Content
Within the content itself, you need to place niche-specific words. You will need to research the top ranking keywords. This can be done through a keyword research tool, such as the Google Keyword Tool that is used for their Adwords system. When you know what is ranking higher, then you can take those exact words and place them throughout your text.
However, make sure that the words fit naturally within the text and are not forced. When the keywords are forced, they sound rather unnatural and the reader may become confused.
In the meantime, make sure your content is unique. Use your own words to create the content with your keywords laced throughout.
Outside of your website
What you do outside your website is what really makes the keywords in your content sing.
There is a process called link building. This is where you build links on external pages throughout the web that lead to your website. When a search engine indexes these pages, they will follow the links that lead to your site and your site will be indexed again and again. You want your website to be indexed as much as possible.
However, be mindful of where you place your links. You can place your links on the websites of others if they will let you. You may also wish to use article marketing websites to place your link in the resource box that comes underneath an informative article you write about your niche.
You can also create a blog outside of your site that leads to your site. Optimize keywords within your blog as well so that they can also be picked up by search engines when scanning the page. And again, your links will be followed to your website. You want to hyperlink words in the text to your website, which makes the process run smoother.
Results
When you let all of these elements work together, you can achieve higher search engine rankings, which means more visitors for you. More visitors mean more sales and more sales means more money.
You'll also notice that you have high quality traffic. This means that you are having 1 purchase for every 100 visitors rather than 1 purchase for every 1000 visitors. This is called "conversion" rate and 1 for every 100 is much better than 1 for every 1000. This is what you want to strive for because that means you'll have 10 purchases for every 1000 visitors. It is amazing how great content and SEO can do that.
